Product preparation
The product is mechanically compressed, it is recommended to loosen it before use.
Repotting into large pots
• Prepare a clean pot with drainage holes that is larger than the root ball.
• Gently remove the root ball and remove dead roots.
• Pour a layer of drainage, such as expanded clay, into the bottom of the pot.
• Place the plant at an adequate depth, fill the pot with theKIK Green Roof Substrate to 2 cm below the edge and slightly compact the soil.
• Water the plant moderately immediately after repotting.
Installation of rain gardens
• Choose a location where you want to install a rain garden. It can be a basin, a box or a depression in the ground (depending on your needs, use additional water drainage and line the basin with geotextile membrane).
• Place the first drainage layer, min. 20 cm, at the bottom to facilitate drainage of excess water. You can use washed gravel, dolomite or expanded clay.
• Spread min. 10 cm of sand on top of the drainage layer; it will clean the run-off water.
• Spread the geotextile fabric.
• Then lay a layer of KIK Green Roof Substrate. The layer should be 20–40 cm thick.
• Before planting the seedlings, compact the substrate well and plant evenly over the entire garden area.
• Water intensively. If the garden settles unevenly during watering, replenish the missing substrate.
• Place a 5 cm layer of gravel 10–30 mm (e.g. pebbles) on top to prevent soil erosion.
Installation of green roofs
• Seal and prepare the roof surface.
• Depending on the type of construction and forms of vegetation, place a drainage layer in the form of loose material, e.g. gravel, or a drainage mat.
• Use a geotextile fabric as a filter layer.
• Spread a layer of the KIK Green Roof Substrate with a thickness depending on the type of plants: 8–20 cm for sedums and other undemanding plants or 20–50 cm for herbs, grasses, perennial plants, shrubs.
• You can now plant, propagate and water.
You should start fertilizing 6-8 weeks after repotting.
Practical advice
• Sloping roofs need a structure to stabilize the vegetation layer against sliding.
• We recommend using slow-release fertilizers in early spring or organic compound fertilizers twice a year.
